The number of Europeans viewing video on mobile devices has increased 66% in the past year, reaching a total of 12.1 million mobile consumers across the UK, France, Germany, Spain and Italy, according to new data from comScore.
The UK and Italy top the table, each with 2.7 million mobile video consumers. The UK market increased by 75%, and Italy grew 55% in the year from July 2009. Mobile video consumption in Spain was up by 90%, making this the fastest growing market overall.
On-demand video demonstrated substantial growth in the past year, with an increase of 99% to 5.2 million consumers. Viewing broadcast TV programmes also increased by 70%, to 3.5 million subscribers.
Not surprisingly, across the 5 countries surveyed, two out of every three people who viewed mobile video were smartphone owners.
